Very Rare !The Historical War Map
by Asher & Co., Indianapolis, Indiana, 1862
=====================================
The map has been de-acidified and backed archivally with a light Japanese Long-Fiber tissue. The map had typical fold separations, now it is complete and solid.
Very minor losses at some of intersecting folds. A little light staining.
Original blue paper binder and text present.
Cloth spine replaced with old cloth. 66 pages of text (starting with page 4 - but that is the actual first page), with 4 single page maps within the text.
(The last picture shows the covers prior to restoration -
just to show that the original cloth spine has been replicated as closely as possible.)

VARIOUS EDITIONS OF ASHER'S HISTORICAL WAR MAP
When trying to establish the publication dates on Asher Maps,
you get a lot of help if you look at what battles are marked on the map.
There are red dots printed on the map at battlefield locations.
There is a true 1862 First Edition, with 24 pg. text.
The text in the First Edition concludes with the Battle of Cedar Mountain, in 1862.
There is Chronology of the War on the left side of the map, which concludes with the Union capture of Norfolk, VA, in May.
THIS COPY seems to be an early 1863 updated edition
, that was out for less than 3 months.
The Chronology has been replaced with statistical information in the lower left, and the text now goes to page 66,
and concludes at the investment of Vicksburg & the Battle of Big Black River
(May 17, 1863)
The green paper you see on the back of the last page wraps around and goes under the front paste-down.
It does not appear to be an addition, but the original tab holding the text into the pamphlet.
Accordingly, I do not believe it is missing any text pages.
There are no signs of torn pages.
The Battle of Gettysburg is not marked on this map -
it is marked on the 3rd edition, of 1863.
There is another 1863 edition of this map
that replaces the statistical information with 4 small inset maps.
This edition has 72 pages of text. This edition has a red dot marking the Battle of Gettysburg, which dates it post-July 1863.
The fourth edition edition this map, was done in 1864.
That copy has replaced the statistical information with the 4 small inset maps,
but the chronology in the text concludes with the Union Convention in Baltimore, in 1864.
The last edition seems to have been done in early 1865
,
having the 4 small inset maps, and 78 pages of text - with a chronology ending in January of 1865.
=============================================================
As far as I can tell, this was the edition of this map that had the shortest period of printing.
I have never seen another of this EXACT version offered for sale.
Most often you find later versions, offered by Asher & Adams.
