The colón (named after Christopher Columbus, known as Cristóbal in Spanish) is the currency of Costa Rica. The 5 colones note is perhaps one of the the most picturesque bills from the Costa Rican numismatics collection. The bill is a tribute to President Rafael Yglesias Castro (1894-1902). The bill's front face bears a portrait of President Yglesias Castro and a depiction of a purple orchid, Costa Rica's national flower. The bill is perhaps most famous for the art that decorates its back face which is based on a painting called "Allegory of Coffee" by Italian painter Aleardo Villa. This painting can be found in the country's Teatro Nacional (Nacional Theatre) in the capital city, San Jose.
