Antique Chinese Gold Couching Silver Pheasant Bird 5th Rank Badge Half Square
This antique Chinese gold couching silver pheasant bird 5th rank badge half square dates from the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. The badge is made of a black silk fabric background, with gold metallic thread couching embroidery work, which tiny red stitches hold the couching work together giving it a contrasting copper color appearance. There is a silver pheasant bird in the center facing to the right for a women's robe badge, with auspicious symbols of good fortune, clouds of smoke and waves of water embroidered on the bottom. The buzi badge is of the silver pheasant which is the symbol of the fifth civil rank badge and is only half of the square showing the back side of the bird and missing the front side for a front opening robe. It is lined backed in a blue silk fabric. The badge square half measures 11 1/2 inches long and is 6 inches wide. It is in good as-is condition, with some faint staining discoloration on the blue silk backing, a few loose frayed gold threads couching work around the border edging and is only one half of a complete badge missing the front half of the bird (great for upcycling). This is truly a wonderful piece of antique Chinese textile art!
