This antique Chinese red silk forbidden stitch embroidered gourd childs hat trim dates from the late 19th century. It is made of a red silk fabric with multicolored forbidden stitch Peking knot hand embroidery work. There is an embroidered floral gourd vine leaf design, which the gourd symbolizes longevity and was often used for scaring away malefic spirits and diseases. This trim would have been part of childs, infants hat. The piece has has been professionally matted with a floral damask weave silk ribbon trim and newer brocade fabric border matting with a golden brown silk backing suitable and ready for framing. It measures 12 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches and is in good condition with only some faint staining, writing on the backing. This is truly a beautiful one of a kind piece of antique Chinese textile embroidery art!
