Los Angeles high school coach arrested on suspicion of sexual assault of a minor
A former high school football coach has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault of a minor, but authorities have not identified him. The coach has been a substitute for two years, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The coach, who was named in news media reports as Tony Bland, was arraigned Monday afternoon in the Los Angeles County Superior Court and is being held on $1 million bail.
Sheriff’s Lt. Bob Dunn said Bland is accused of sexual contact with a student at a private school in the Los Angeles area. The name of the school has not been disclosed.
Dunn said the Sheriff’s Department was notified of the arrest at least a week ago for “suspicion of sexual misconduct.”
Bland was interviewed and had not made any statements to investigators, Dunn said.
Bland has coached at Crenshaw High School in the unincorporated Los Angeles County community of Crenshaw since 2007. A private school for special needs students, the football team is coached by former college head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The school’s principal, James Vosk, said he met with Bland last week.
Vosk declined to comment further.
He said a letter from the school’s board, dated Thursday, had been sent out to parents.
“We do not comment on personnel or personnel matters,” the letter said.
